Dejan Lovren to hit league century as Liverpool look to end scoring woes at Southampton

Liverpool take on Southampton at St. Mary’s on Sunday looking to move back into the top three in the Premier League—here are the key stats ahead of the clash.

Recent Goal Trends Bucking History

At St. Mary’s last season the teams played out the first ever league goalless draw at Southampton in the 42nd league meeting.

In the clash at Anfield back in November the Reds ran out 3-0 winners, with Mohamed Salah scoring twice and Philippe Coutinho netting the other.

Those three goals are the only ones Liverpool have scored in the last five league and cup clashes with Southampton.

There have never been successive 0-0 draws in league meetings between the clubs at Southampton.

Liverpool’s biggest-ever Premier League win came against Southampton—the Reds winning 7-1 at Anfield in January 1999.

Sadio Mane scored and was sent off in the same game against Liverpool while with Southampton—in Jurgen Klopp‘s first Anfield league game in charge of the Reds.

He played 75 times for today’s opponents, scoring 25 goals, including 21 in 67 appearances in the Premier League.

Adam Lallana played 265 times for Saints in league and cup, scoring 60 times. Injury has restricted him to just two starts this season and seven appearances (222 minutes) in total.

Dejan Lovren made 31 appearances for Southampton in his only season at St Mary’s (2013-14)—netting twice, one of those coming at Anfield.

The centre-back could play his 100th league game for the Reds today.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain began his career with Southampton, playing 43 times and scoring 10 goals.

When making his debut for the club in March 2010 he became the Saints’ second youngest-ever player after Theo Walcott, aged 16 years 199 days.

He has never scored against the Saints in 12 career appearances.

Virgil van Dijk played 80 times for Southampton from 2015-18, scoring seven times.

He played six times against Liverpool in all competitions, winning two, drawing two and losing two.

Salah Chasing Suarez

Salah’s first goal at Anfield this season was the 100th in meetings between the clubs in the Premier League.

Salah has scored 10 league goals away from home this season. The club record in the Premier League is held by Luis Suarez (14 in 2013-14).

Only the Uruguayan (who also scored 12 in 2012-13) has netted more than Salah in this era.

The Egyptian is two goals away from becoming only the 13th different Reds player to score 30 goals in a season in all competitions.

Milestones in Reach

Joel Matip could make his 50th league appearance for the Reds in this game.

Only twice in the last 16 seasons have Liverpool seen 2 players score 20 times in a campaign (all competitions). Currently Mohamed Salah has 28 and Roberto Firmino 19.

In Liverpool’s 13 away league games this season 54 goals have been scored in total.

The Reds have scored at least twice in 10 of the last 11 games in all competitions.

Odds & Ends

The man in charge of this fixture is Martin Atkinson. He has not refereed Southampton since they won at Anfield in the League Cup Semi-Final in January 2017.

Mauricio Pellegrino played 13 times for Liverpool during a spell with the club in 2005. His second game was a 2-0 defeat at Southampton.

Divock Origi‘s hat-trick in the League Cup in 2015 is the only one by a Liverpool player at Southampton and only their fourth against the Saints.

Roberto Firmino has scored 12 goals in his last 14 starts.

In the last 5 league visits to Southampton Liverpool have either kept a clean sheet (3 times) or conceded 3 goals (twice).
