Video: Jurgen Klopp clears up misunderstanding with Brighton’s Chris Hughton

Jurgen Klopp has apologised to Brighton manager Chris Hughton for their tense interaction after Liverpool’s 5-1 win at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

The Reds were in excellent form as they blitzed the newly promoted Seagulls on the way to their eighth game unbeaten, returning to the Premier League‘s top four.

A brace from Roberto Firmino, goals from Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho and a Lewis Dunk own goal consigned Brighton to a miserable defeat.

And such was the compelling nature of his side’s victory, Klopp was clearly caught up in the celebrations at full-time, to the displeasure of Hughton.

But speaking ahead of the Reds’ Champions League clash with Spartak Moscow in midweek, Klopp explained how their exchange after the final whistle was a “misunderstanding.”

“It was a misunderstanding, nothing else. I have to apologise, not that I did something wrong on purpose, it just happened,” he said.

“I went to shake his hand and Mo Salah passed my way, I gave him a hug and then Chris wasn’t too happy about that.

“We shook hands, he said what he thought and what I think as well: that you have to shake the hand of the manager first.

“I wanted to see him [after the game], he was not there but I spoke to his assistant. I think and I hope everything is fine.

“For sure one or two times in my life I’ve been disrespectful, but it was not my intention.”

It is ridiculous that Klopp was forced to defend his actions, with pundits such as Ian Wright and Garth Crooks questionably weighing in after Saturday’s clash.
